8 Signs You Have A Termite Problem
Though you may not notice termites during the Summer Season, they can still be doing damage to your home. These pests become easier to spot starting in summer.
It’s very important to be aware of the signs of infestation so you can detect the presence of termites early on. Here are 8 signs of a termite infestation to watch for.
1. Noise In The Walls
When termites sense danger, they bang their heads against their tunnels to warn the rest of the colony. If you hear similar noises coming from the walls or in any wood that’s in or near your home, you’ll want to get that checked ASAP.
2. Peeling Paint
You may see paint bubbling or peeling off the walls and think it’s just water damage. While that’s always a possibility, it could also be a sign of termites. These insects survive off of humid environments and therefore bring moisture with them wherever they go. This can cause paint damage as termites feed closer to the wall.
3. Mud Tunnels
Mud tunnels are usually found around the foundation of the exterior of the home or in the basement. Termites need to be in a humid environment, so they will connect their colonies to a food source using mud tunnels to avoid drying out. If you see mud tubes on your property, do not knock them down. Termites can easily rebuild their tunnels. Removal should be done by a professional (i Pest Control).
4. Damaged Wood
There are two key points, to look for when it comes to wood damage. If the wood is exposed, you may see holes or mazes carved by these insects. Termites also tend to feed on wood from the inside out.
5. Swarmers
Swarmers can be seen anytime, depending on the subtype. seeing swarms of termites near your home is not a good sign and usually means a colony has been around for a while. These pests will usually shed their wings near window seals or doorways.
6. Hard-To-Open Doors
A tight window or door frame doesn’t always mean termites are around, but it can still be a sign to watch for. As termites create humid environments wherever they travel, this can cause the wood around doors and windows to warp, making them hard to open or close. A tight window or door frame doesn’t always mean termites are around, but it can still be a sign to watch for.
7. Frass
Dry wood termites can be harder to spot, the reason is clear, they have everything they need to survive right in the woodwork. But, small piles of frass can be a sign of their presence. Dry wood termites will remove waste from their nests and deposit it through the dump holes they carve.
8. Bubbled Floorboards
Similar to peeling paint and warped door frames, termites can also cause damage to wood flooring. While termites may not be the only factor, bubbling or extra noisy floorboards can be a sign of an infestation.
